Economic Impact of All Blacks vs Italy Rugby Test Match on Hamilton City economy

The project
Event analysis All Blacks vs Italy test match in the new Waikato stadium to determine the economic benefits to the city.
The All Blacks vs Italy game was the first time an international test match had been held in the new Waikato stadium. The event increased spending in the city and also attracted visitors to Hamilton from outside the region.
The clients’ needs were for financial analysis to provide information for future decision making including:
• On-going costs of infrastructure
• Public funding provision for future infrastructure
• Any future capital expenditure
• Forecasting growth requirements
• Public sector funding support of major events in Hamilton Research
We measured the economic value of the incremental revenues that were earned and occurred in the Hamilton region as a result of the Rugby Test match.
Horwath Asia Pacific worked in conjunction with the School of Management, The University of Waikato. Market research was conducted using face-to-face interviews at the game. Research detailed spending (both that at the game and in the city as a result of the event) accommodation used and also measured the proportion of total attendees at the game who came from outside Hamilton.
Follow-up
We analysed the economic impact of the event on the local Hamilton economy including the downstream effects of the event spending. This also translates into the number of jobs created or supported in the region as a result of the increased revenues.
The results were delivered within a month of the event.
On-going Event Economic studies
Future projects include event economic impact analysis of the development in sporting, cultural and festivals.

Stephen Hamilton previously had responsibility together with another organisation for preparation of the Economic Impact Analysis of the America’s Cup 2000 for their client, the Office of Tourism and Sport.
